כותרת הקורס לקוחה מטקסט המאגד שיחות של הפילוסוף הקונטיננטלי ז'אק רנסייר עם אריק חזן מיד לאחר בחירתו של דונלד טראמפ לכהונת נשיא ארה"ב ב-2016. במרכז השיחות רנסייר הציב את השאלות: כיצד ניתן לקרא את רגע ההווה מתוך ההווה המתחולל? מהם תנאי האפשרות של קריאה כזו? מיהו בן זמננו? מהי הפוליטיקה של הזמן העכשווי? ועוד.
בקורס זה נחשוב את השאלות הללו ונציע קריאות פילוסופיות מגוונות של הזמן העכשווי בישראל ובעולם המערבי. נבחן תופעות וסוגיות פוליטיות, חברתיות ותרבותיות בולטות המתחוללות בזמן הזה, ונדון בפוליטיקה הקובעת את מבטנו כלפי הרגע הנוכחי והממסגרת אותו.
בין הנושאים שבהם נעסוק בקורס, נדון ב-"שנאת הדמוקרטיה" של הזמן העכשווי, נחשוב מחדש את מושג "העם" ונציע מחשבות פילוסופיות אודות הקריאות "אנחנו העם"; נדון גם בסוגיות של זהות והזדהות ונציע את המושגים: "חלוקת החושי", "חיים חשופים" ונאו-גזענות; נעסוק פילוסופית בסוגיות הנוגעות לעבודת אבל ובזכות לעבודה כזו ונציע את התמה של: מחשבת "ההונטולוגיה" (הרדופה על ידי רוחות רפאים המגיחות מן העתיד והעבר); נדון בחשיבות מושג "האירוע" בהגות הקונטיננטלית העכשווית, ונבחן את הכוח הטמון ביציאה לרחובות (ממחאות הכיכרות, דרך "לכבוש את וולסטריט", המחאות בישראל מאז 2022). שאלת האפשרות להתנגד, תוביל אותנו אל דיון במושג "הישרדות הגחליליות" בעקבות פאוזוליני ודידי הוברמן. נדון גם במיפנה האָפקטיבי של הפוליטי העכשווי ובתפקיד שממלאים אָפקטים ורגשות בפוליטיקה ובתרבות הדמוקרטית של המאה ה21.
בבואנו לבחון תופעות תרבותיות מרכזיות של הזמן הזה, נשאל ונבחן כל העת את היחסים העכשוויים שבין האסתטי לפוליטי ונדון הפוליטיקה של האסתטיקה ובאסתטיקה של הפוליטיקה.
את כל זאת נעשה בעקבות הוגים קונטיננטליים עכשוויים כמו: ז'אק דרידה, ז'אן פרנסואה ליוטר, אטיין בליבר, ז'אק רנסייר, ג'ורג'יו אגמבן, שנטל מוף, שרה אחמד, ג'ודית' באטלר, ז'ורז' דידי הוברמן, ועוד.
יעדו של הקורס הוא לפתוח בפני הסטודנטיות והסטודנטים צהרים אל ההגות הקונטיננטלית העכשווית, אל השאלות והמושגים הביקורתיים העומדים במרכז ביקורת התרבות, החברה והפוליטיקה של ההגות הזו, ולהציע פרספקטיבות הגותיות המאפשרות לבחון ולחשוב מתוכן את מציאות זמננו, כאן ועכשיו.

The title of this course is taken from a series of conversations between the Continental philosopher Jacques Rancière and Éric Hazan, held shortly after Donald Trump’s election as President of the United States in 2016. At the heart of these dialogues, Rancière placed the following questions: How can the present moment be read from within its unfolding? What are the conditions of possibility for such a reading? Who is our contemporary? What is the politics of the contemporary moment?
In this course, we will engage with these questions and propose a variety of philosophical readings of the current moment in Israel and across the Western world. We will examine prominent political, social, and cultural phenomena of our time, and reflect on the politics that shapes and frames our perception of the present.
Among the topics we will address in this course: we will discuss the contemporary “hatred of democracy”; we will reread the concept of “the people” and will propose philosophical inquiries into the current political proclamations such as “We the people”; we will discuss questions of identity and identification through key concepts such as the “distribution of the sensible,” “bare life,” and neo-racism; following Derrida and Butler we will rethink philosophical issues concerning the work of mourning and the right to mourn, with attention to the theme of hauntology—thought haunted by specters emerging from both future and past; we will also discuss the importance of the concept of “the event” in contemporary continental thought and examine the political and symbolic power of taking to the streets—from square protests and Occupy Wall Street to the waves of protest in Israel since 2022. The question of the possibility of resistance will lead us into a discussion of “the survival of the fireflies,” inspired by Pasolini and Georges Didi-Huberman; we will also consider the affective turn in contemporary political thought and the role that emotions and affect play in 21st-century democratic politics and culture.
As we examine key cultural phenomena of our time, we will continually reflect on the evolving relationship between the aesthetic and the political, addressing both the politics of aesthetics and the aesthetics of politics.
Throughout the course, we will read and think alongside contemporary continental thinkers such as Jacques Derrida, Jean-François Lyotard, Étienne Balibar, Jacques Rancière, Giorgio Agamben, Chantal Mouffe, Sara Ahmed, Judith Butler, Georges Didi-Huberman, and others.
The aim of the course is to open a path for students into contemporary continental philosophy, to engage with its critical concepts and questions at the intersection of culture, society, and politics, and to offer theoretical perspectives for thinking our own present—here and now.
Course Requirements:
A final take-home paper to be submitted at the end of the course.
Optional Assignment:
An in-class presentation of a philosophical reading (referat) on a selected topic.
